To be honest, I don't put much stock in awards shows like this. There's too many "sounds" and subjective cats online to truly decipher who the "best" in Drum & Bass is in any given year. Some things are undeniable...
Chase & Status definitely deserved their awards (I definitely enjoyed
More Than Alot), but I think "Tear You Down" from
Brookes Brothers was THE tune of 2008. Was
Annie Mac truly the best female DJ in 2008 for DnB? I wouldn't say so, but I'm a supporter of
DJ Flight. Sue me. And did
Tali really have an competition?
I heard some chatter about
Pendulum getting boo'd with their Best Live Band win. While I'm not the biggest Pendulum fan, who else brought DnB on a live stage quite like them, including the massive amount of shows and appearances they've made?
I just think its such a hard genre to try and come up with meaningful awards for. And the criteria is off - Tali probably does her thing live, but she hasn't put out much. Should they put "best LIVE female MC" as the award? I personally think these awards should be split into categories: releases and live. Have one section where we're strictly saying "this award is for best performance of the year in the club/on stage", or "this is the best recorded performance", because I could name MCs who are better, lyrically, than
Skibadee is. You just don't hear them in the club - but the tracks they are on are testament enough.
But who am I to judge... I'm just writing about the scene.
